ABB has secured a contract from Intertrade Hellas S.A. to deliver its NP1200-based Quality Control System (QCS) to both existing and new tissue machines at the company’s Inofyta production site in Greece. The upgrade will enhance product consistency, process efficiency, and production data visibility across multiple lines.

Founded in 1992, Intertrade Hellas is a privately owned tissue manufacturer located near Athens, operating four plants with 14 production lines and an annual output of up to 78,000 tonnes. The company produces two flagship retail brands alongside private-label products for major supermarket chains, exporting approximately 18% of its output to over 28 countries in Europe and the Middle East.

ABB will provide the NP1200 QCS platform for two tissue machines, integrating precise measurement sensors, advanced controls, and full connectivity with the mill’s existing distributed control system (DCS). This integration will allow for streamlined operations, improved process control, reduced variability, and quicker responses to production changes.

The first QCS will be installed on Tissue Machine 1 (TM1) by October 2025. A second, identical system will be delivered in 2026 to support the commissioning of Tissue Machine 2 (TM2).

Stefano Cinquina, Global Business Line Manager for Pulp and Paper at ABB Process Industries, stated: “Intertrade Hellas is committed to operational efficiency, reliability, and long-term performance. Our Quality Control System supports these objectives, enabling more consistent, sustainable production.”

The project also includes ABB Ability™ History, a process information management platform that provides secure, scalable access to time-series data. This platform supports real-time monitoring, energy and consumables reporting, and connects to third-party systems via OPC-UA for a unified digital ecosystem.

Konstantinos Kintis, Technical Coordinator & Production Engineer at Intertrade Hellas, said: “The robustness of this system in challenging conditions, combined with advanced data capabilities, will help us optimize production processes and support our sustainability goals.”

The ABB QCS incorporates long-life components for demanding industrial environments, reducing maintenance needs. Advanced basis weight and moisture sensors feed ABB’s multivariable cross-directional control system, optimizing energy use and raw material consumption. These features will help Intertrade Hellas improve efficiency, reduce energy usage, and minimize environmental impact in line with its sustainability strategy.
