JSW Energy Limited announced the commissioning of the third and final 80 MW unit of the Kutehr Hydroelectric Power Plant in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh, completing the 240 MW greenfield project. Recognised as one of the fastest-executed greenfield hydro developments in the country, the plant will supply its entire capacity to the Haryana Power Purchase Centre under a 35-year agreement at a levelised ceiling tariff of ₹4.50/kWh, with provisions for extension. With Kutehr now operational, JSW Energy’s hydro capacity stands at 1,631 MW, alongside 2,157 MW of solar and 3,574 MW of wind assets, taking the share of renewables in the company’s portfolio to 57%.

Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO, said “The commissioning of the Kutehr Hydro Plant reflects our ability to deliver complex infrastructure projects within tight timelines. Completing the project in under six years, despite COVID-19 disruptions and challenging weather conditions, is a testament to our execution capabilities. The timing is favourable, allowing us to benefit from the current high-generation season with strong water inflows.”

JSW Energy’s total locked-in generation capacity is 30.3 GW, including 13.0 GW operational assets, 12.7 GW under construction across thermal and renewable segments, and a 4.6 GW pipeline. The company also has 29.4 GWh of locked-in energy storage projects, comprising 26.4 GWh of hydro pumped storage and 3.0 GWh of battery storage. The company targets 30 GW of generation capacity and 40 GWh of storage capacity by FY 2030, with a goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Part of the USD 23 billion JSW Group, JSW Energy is one of India’s leading private sector power producers. Since launching operations in 2000 with a 2×130 MW thermal plant in Vijayanagar, Karnataka, the company has expanded its capacity to 12.9 GW, covering a broad range of fuel types and geographies. With interests in power generation and transmission, JSW Energy is focused on sustainable expansion, sound governance, and long-term value creation for its stakeholders.
