Porsche’s Leipzig factory has reached a significant production milestone, rolling out its one-millionth Macan. Since its debut in 2013, the compact SUV has grown into one of the brand’s most successful models globally, with 82,795 units delivered in the 2024 financial year alone.
“The Macan has become a defining part of Leipzig’s automotive story,” said Gerd Rupp, Chairman of the Management Board of Porsche Leipzig GmbH. “It not only marked the expansion of our facility into a full-scale plant but also signaled our entry into the era of electromobility.”
Production of the Macan in Leipzig began following a strategic decision in 2011, which led to a major upgrade of the facility. The former assembly plant was transformed into a comprehensive manufacturing hub with its own body and paint shops, creating 1,500 new jobs in the process.
In 2024, Porsche began series production of the fully electric second-generation Macan, reflecting the brand’s evolving focus on sustainable mobility. The Leipzig facility now produces vehicles across combustion, hybrid, and electric powertrains on a single, highly flexible production line. An expansion is currently underway to add a new body shop and axle production line.
The landmark one-millionth unit is a Macan 4 in Frozen Blue Metallic, equipped with standout features including a two-tone Black and Chalk leather interior, Adaptive Sports Seats, a heated GT Sports steering wheel, a head-up display with augmented reality, and a panoramic sunroof. With an overboost output of 300 kW (408 hp), the Macan 4 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds and has a top speed of 220 km/h. It features a 100 kWh high-voltage battery offering a range of up to 612 km, and can charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 21 minutes using 800V DC fast charging.
The milestone vehicle was delivered to its new owner, Stefan Schmidt from Kiel, at the Porsche Experience Center Leipzig. “The Macan offers the perfect balance of everyday comfort and Porsche performance,” said the 62-year-old entrepreneur. Schmidt also enjoyed a guided track session with a similar model, exploring the vehicle’s handling at the in-house racetrack, which features corners inspired by famous circuits around the world.
Porsche’s Leipzig facility opened in 2002 and is now home to around 5,000 employees. The site currently manufactures the Macan and Panamera models. It previously produced the Cayenne SUV and the Carrera GT supercar. The location also includes the award-winning Porsche Experience Center, combining production excellence with customer engagement through track driving and off-road experiences. The plant has received accolades such as the ‘Lean and Green Management Award’ in 2021 and was named ‘Factory of the Year’ in 2023.
