Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) has secured a 30 MW/120 MWh battery storage project from NHPC Ltd, a government-owned power utility. The contract was awarded as part of NHPC’s BESS Tranche-I initiative through a competitive bidding process. The energy storage system will be developed for the Kerala State Electricity Board Ltd (KSEB), which will be the end-user.

The facility will be installed at a 220 kV substation in Kerala and is designed to deliver 30 MW of power for up to four hours, totaling 120 MWh of energy storage capacity. According to TPREL, this marks its first Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA), which will be valid for a period of 12 years. The project is expected to be operational within 15 months. Once completed, it will enhance energy reliability by supporting renewable integration and meeting peak electricity demand in the region.

This project forms part of NHPC’s broader goal to establish 125 MW / 500 MWh of standalone battery storage capacity across Kerala. The initiative is being carried out under a Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding model and is supported by Viability Gap Funding.

With this development, TPREL’s total renewable energy portfolio has grown to around 10.9 GW. This includes 5.6 GW in operation—comprising 4.6 GW of solar and 1 GW of wind—and an additional 5.3 GW currently in the pipeline.

Tata Power Company Limited, a key player in India’s integrated power sector and part of the Tata Group, holds a diversified portfolio of 15.7 GW. This portfolio spans renewable and conventional energy generation, transmission, distribution, trading, storage, and solar cell/module manufacturing. As a pioneer in India’s clean energy transition, Tata Power generates 6.9 GW of clean energy, accounting for 44% of its total capacity. With a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, Tata Power serves approximately 12.8 million customers across India and partners with both public and private sectors nationwide.
