Taiwan-based semiconductor leader MediaTek is intensifying its focus on India’s automotive sector, anticipating that the country will represent 20% of its worldwide automotive chip deployments over the next five years, according to company executives.
“India is set to account for a fifth of our automotive segment deployments globally in the coming years,” said Rita Wu, Director of Product Marketing for MediaTek’s Automotive Platform. “The Indian market has unique requirements, so we have engineers on the ground working closely to understand and address those needs.”
Ms Wu emphasized that while automotive trends may be similar worldwide, India demands adaptable hardware and software platforms specifically tailored to its market conditions. Market research firm Counterpoint identifies India as the fastest-growing connected car market, forecasting an 18% compound annual growth rate between 2025 and 2030. “Government initiatives, the influx of international OEMs, shifts in sourcing strategies, and growing vehicle software importance have opened strategic opportunities for Indian companies to expand and position the country as a global automotive hub,” said Steven Lee, Deputy Director of Intelligent Software Development at MediaTek.
Mr Lee added that the industry is undergoing rapid transformation powered by 5G-enabled machine-to-machine communication, artificial intelligence, and advanced multimedia systems—technologies advancing beyond traditional 4G frameworks. “Our Dimensity Automotive lineup integrates cutting-edge AI, energy efficiency, strong security features, and top-tier connectivity,” Mr Lee explained. “We collaborate closely with automakers to deliver sophisticated in-car experiences, including AI-driven cockpits with robust cybersecurity and enhanced network performance.”
MediaTek currently employs about 1,000 engineers in India, with 50 focused on automotive product development—a number set to double soon. Its research centers in Bengaluru and Noida, along with a Mumbai office, reflect a strong commitment to creating solutions optimized for India’s automotive environment, particularly in electric four-wheelers. Among Indian clients are Tata Motors, JSW MG Motor India, and Skoda. Globally, MediaTek supplies major automakers such as Volkswagen, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, BMW, and Audi.
As a fabless semiconductor firm, MediaTek designs its chips but outsources manufacturing primarily to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Although the company is open to collaborating with Indian fabrication plants as the local semiconductor ecosystem evolves, it currently relies on established overseas foundries for advanced chip production. While MediaTek’s main business in India centers on smartphone chips, followed by smart TVs, IoT devices, energy meters, and Wi-Fi routers, it sees automotive and IoT sectors as key drivers of future growth.
