JSW Infrastructure has secured a Letter of Award from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority in Kolkata for the redevelopment and mechanisation of key container berths at the Netaji Subhas Dock. As part of the project, the company will reconstruct berth number 8 and implement mechanisation at berths 8 and 9.

The project will be carried out under the DBFOT (Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer) model, with JSW Infra overseeing the complete development and operations for a concession period of 30 years. The company has committed to invest ₹740 crore over the next two years to complete the construction and modernisation work.

This order marks a strategic move for JSW Infrastructure as it looks to expand its footprint on India’s eastern coast. While it already operates at six locations along the western coast and at the Paradip Terminal in Odisha, this will be its first project at the Kolkata port—making it the second location for JSW on the eastern seaboard.

The addition of the Kolkata terminal is expected to significantly enhance the company’s container handling capabilities. JSW’s New Mangalore Container Terminal currently has a capacity of 2 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), with plans underway to expand to 3.05 million TEUs. The new Kolkata facility is projected to add an additional 1 million TEUs to its network.

JSW Infrastructure, one of the leading private port operators in India, currently runs 14 ports and terminals across India and the UAE, with a combined handling capacity of 170 million tonnes annually. With increasing competition from players like Adani Ports, JSW aims to scale up its capacity to 400 million tonnes per annum, and projects like the Kolkata port are vital to achieving that goal.

JSW Infrastructure handles a wide range of cargo, including dry bulk, liquid cargo, and containers, with a strong focus on operational efficiency and sustainability. By leveraging advanced technology and expanding its capacity, the company plays a vital role in driving economic growth and facilitating global trade. With its commitment to innovation and sustainability, JSW Infrastructure is poised to become a key enabler of India’s infrastructure development and international competitiveness.
