Limassol-based Interorient Navigation Co Ltd, in partnership with Danship & Partners Ltd, has confirmed a Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of ₹10,000 crore into India’s shipping industry. This initiative marks the largest FDI in the sector since it was liberalised for full foreign investment in 2005. Interorient is led by Themis Papadopoulas of Cyprus, while Danship & Partners is headed by Indian maritime expert Capt. Danniel Gautam Chopra.

This significant move not only strengthens commercial ties between India and Cyprus but also highlights the growing cooperation between the two nations in maritime affairs. The announcement comes shortly after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Cyprus on June 15, 2025—his first to the island nation in over 20 years. During his meeting with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, discussions included enhancing bilateral maritime collaboration under the existing Indo-Cyprus Maritime Cooperation Framework.

Aligned with national initiatives such as ‘Maritime India Vision 2030’, ‘SagarMala’, and the broader development goals under ‘Amrit Kaal Vision 2047’, the proposed investment will support India’s self-reliance drive and long-term economic ambitions. The venture is expected to boost local capacity and maritime infrastructure while increasing India’s registered shipping tonnage.

Key benefits of the investment include the registration of all vessels under the Indian flag, significantly boosting the country’s shipping fleet. It will also open employment opportunities for Indian seafarers, cadets, and trainees. Moreover, freight earnings from the export-import trade will remain within the Indian economy, adding to national revenue and enhancing economic resilience.

This strategic initiative is poised to support India’s rise as a leading global economy, reinforcing its position in the maritime world and contributing to long-term national growth.
