Lockheed Martin Skunk Works® has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Electra.aero Inc, to collaborate on advancing the development of Electra’s EL9 ultra-short takeoff and landing (Ultra-STOL) aircraft. As one of the world’s foremost aerospace and defense companies, Lockheed Martin will bring its expertise in digital engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, sustainment, and global business development to help accelerate the EL9’s growth.
The partnership will also explore potential opportunities with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and international clients, assessing programs that could enhance the application of the EL9 for both commercial and military uses. The Electra EL9 is set to revolutionize aviation, particularly in areas like last-mile logistics, mobile power generation, and emergency response. The Ultra-STOL aircraft is capable of taking off and landing in just 150 feet, even from unimproved surfaces, providing operational flexibility in remote or challenging environments. With a range of over 1,000 miles and the ability to carry 1,000 pounds, the EL9 offers unique advantages for both defense and commercial sectors.
Marc Allen, CEO of Electra, highlighted the strategic value of the partnership: “Lockheed Martin’s expertise in manufacturing, supply chain, and military applications aligns perfectly with our strategy for the EL9’s commercialization. This collaboration will accelerate our ability to bring the EL9’s transformative capabilities to military users faster.”
OJ Sanchez, Vice President and General Manager at Lockheed Martin Skunk Works®, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: “Electra’s advancements in hybrid-electric technology are significant, and we look forward to accelerating their development and expanding their potential applications.”
This agreement builds on an existing relationship between the two companies. In 2022, Lockheed Martin Ventures had already made a strategic investment in Electra’s Series A funding round, solidifying their commitment to the company’s vision.
