Vedanta’s Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO) is increasing its production of aluminium wire rods in line with its broader goal of scaling overall output to 1 million tonnes per year. The move aligns with growing domestic demand driven by India’s rapid digital infrastructure rollout, including 5G networks, rural connectivity, and smart city development.

Aluminium, known for its conductivity, corrosion resistance, and durability, is playing a crucial role in enabling these advancements. BALCO’s wire rods, certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), are used extensively in applications such as signal transmission, power infrastructure, and fibre optic networks.

In FY25, BALCO manufactured over 200,000 tonnes of aluminium wire rods, all supplied to domestic markets, with major demand from Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. Its product line includes specialised grades suited for critical applications in sectors such as telecom, power, and industrial manufacturing.

BALCO was the first in the country to earn BIS 5484 certification for alloy wire rods, underscoring its focus on quality and innovation. The company is now nearing completion of several major expansion initiatives aimed at nearly doubling its aluminium production capacity—from 0.57 to 1 million tonnes annually.

Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, noted that aluminium wire rods are integral to building the country’s digital and energy infrastructure. “As demand rises, especially in telecom and power sectors, our expanded capacity will ensure reliable supply of high-performance materials,” he said. Beyond telecom and power transmission, BALCO’s wire rods are also used in the automotive, electrical equipment, and steel sectors, contributing to India’s broader industrial growth.

Vedanta Aluminium, a division of Vedanta Limited, produced 2.42 million tonnes of aluminium in FY25—over half of the nation’s total output. The company is a leader in downstream aluminium products and was ranked second globally in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment for the aluminium industry in 2024. Its integrated operations include aluminium smelters, an alumina refinery, and power plants located across India, supporting sustainable and future-ready metal solutions.
