Recycled Plastic Tricolor by Coca-Cola India Sets National Record

A giant Indian flag made from recycled plastic bottles has secured a spot in the Limca Book of Records 2025 for being the largest flag constructed entirely from recycled materials. The initiative, led by Coca-Cola India during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, showcases a practical approach to environmental responsibility and sustainable design.

The flag, revealed at the World Cup’s opening ceremony and displayed at all of India’s matches, was developed as part of the Maidaan Saaf campaign. Made using yarn from over 11,000 post-consumer PET bottles, the project involved partnerships with sustainability organizations like Go Rewise and Ganesha Ecoverse Limited, using Global Recycled Standard (GRS)-certified materials.

The cricket tournament, held from October 5 to November 19, 2023, spanned 10 stadiums across India and included more than 1,000 volunteers. Dressed in jackets made from recycled plastic, these volunteers helped raise awareness about responsible waste disposal and recycling among fans, actively contributing to cleaner venues.

“This record is more than just a milestone—it reflects our dedication to rethinking waste and embracing environmental solutions,” said Devyani Rana, Vice President of Public Affairs, Communications, and Sustainability at Coca-Cola India & Southwest Asia. She credited partners Go Rewise and the ICC for their roles in bringing the project to life.

Anurag Dahiya, Chief Commercial Officer at the International Cricket Council, praised the campaign for demonstrating how environmental action can align with global sports events, creating a message that resonates beyond the field.

Yash Sharma, founder of Go Rewise, added, “This project proves that post-consumer plastic can be transformed into symbols of national pride. It’s an example of what’s possible when innovation meets purpose.”

Launched in 2023, Maidaan Saaf focuses on enhancing recycling systems, developing sustainable packaging solutions, and encouraging environmental awareness at major public events. The campaign supports Coca-Cola India’s broader sustainability goals, including improved packaging design and collaborative collection efforts, aiming to deliver tangible environmental outcomes.
