Alstom Teams Up with Outokumpu to Supply Low-Carbon Stainless Steel for Metro Vehicles

Alstom, a global leader in sustainable smart mobility, has partnered with Outokumpu, a worldwide expert in eco-friendly stainless steel, to provide stainless steel that reduces carbon emissions by up to 93% compared to the industry average. The initial batch of Outokumpu’s Circle Green® stainless steel is set for delivery in 2026 and will be incorporated into the newest Alstom Metropolis metro trains. This collaboration supports Alstom’s sustainability goals, including a target to cut carbon emissions from its purchased goods and services by 30% by 2030.

Véronique Andriès, Vice President of Sustainability and CSR at Alstom, stated “Our partnership perfectly aligns with the eco-design principles that guide our product and service development. Using stainless steel with a significantly lower carbon footprint than conventional steel is an important step in cutting our CO₂ emissions.”

As cities continue to grow and urbanization intensifies, transport systems must evolve to offer greener mobility solutions. This alliance enables Alstom to boost the recycled steel content in its products while contributing to emission reduction targets. Circle Green stainless steel from Outokumpu will be applied on the exterior panels of Alstom’s Metropolis metro cars.
