Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has launched its innovative ‘Project Greening Classrooms’ under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, positively impacting 70 government schools in Shravasti, Uttar Pradesh. The initiative has resulted in the installation of 1,400 benches made from recycled plastic, blending environmental sustainability with educational progress and community engagement.

The project goes beyond infrastructure improvements, integrating plastic waste management with environmental education. Students and teachers participated in informative sessions that taught the importance of plastic waste segregation, collection campaigns, and recycling, making these schools centers for sustainable practices.

A key feature of this project is the establishment of 15 student ambassadors at each school, known as BPCL Blue Nudge Ambassadors. These students received specialized training through online modules on Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) to become leaders in promoting sustainability within their schools and communities. As part of their roles, the ambassadors were given T-shirts made from recycled plastic, embodying the values of the initiative.

The project was executed by BPCL’s CSR team with technical support from Delhi Research Implementation and Innovation (DRIIV). This initiative serves as a scalable model, demonstrating how corporations, government schools, and local communities can collaborate to address environmental challenges while enhancing the learning environment.

Bharat Petroleum reaffirms its commitment to combating plastic pollution and promoting environmental sustainability. In line with the global theme “Beat Plastic Pollution,” BPCL has adopted circular economy practices across its operations. This includes using post-consumer recycled plastics in its lubricant containers and funding the creation of more than 1,400 benches made from recycled plastic for schools. The company is also expanding its renewable energy efforts by investing in green hydrogen and biofuels, alongside improving energy efficiency at its refineries. These actions are part of BPCL’s wider strategy to reduce its plastic footprint, conserve resources, and contribute to a cleaner planet.

Bharat Petroleum, a Fortune Global 500 company, is one of India’s largest oil marketing firms and a key player in the oil and gas industry. With a refining capacity of 35.3 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) across its refineries in Mumbai, Kochi, and Bina, BPCL serves a vast network that includes over 23,500 fuel stations and 6,200 LPG distributors.

The company is focused on sustainable energy solutions, with plans to become a Net Zero Energy company by 2040. BPCL also supports a range of community initiatives in areas such as education, water conservation, health, and skill development, all while prioritizing environmental responsibility in its business operations.
