ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) is proud to have played a pivotal role in transforming India’s infrastructure by supplying vital steel for two of the country’s most remarkable railway bridges. The company provided 70% of the steel for the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge, and 100% of the steel for the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge.
The dedication of these monumental structures by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi marks a crucial step towards realizing India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047. These projects stand as testament to India’s engineering capabilities and its determination to build a brighter future. AM/NS India is both proud and humbled to have contributed to these landmark infrastructure projects with its world-class steel.
AM/NS India supplied 25,000 metric tonnes of high-strength structural steel, which accounted for 70% of the steel used in the Chenab Bridge. The steel was custom-designed for various components, including high-strength material for the arch and tailored grades for the pillars—marking a first of its kind in India on this scale. Produced at AM/NS India’s flagship Hazira facility, the steel was carefully manufactured under strict quality control, undergoing rigorous third-party testing to ensure durability, rust resistance, and suitability for the bridge’s extreme altitude and seismic zone.
For the Anji Khad Bridge, the company provided approximately 7,000 metric tonnes of custom-fabricated steel, meeting the entire steel requirement for the project. The steel, also produced at Hazira, was specially designed to meet the bridge’s specific structural and environmental needs. The steel was subject to strict quality standards, ensuring the project’s long-term durability. The fabrication process was carried out almost entirely in-house, utilizing enhanced facilities to handle the complexity of the bridge’s design.
AM/NS India implemented precise planning and agile execution methods to meet the demanding requirements of both projects. This included optimized production schedules across facilities and a flexible supply chain to ensure uninterrupted delivery, despite potential challenges.
These projects reflect AM/NS India’s commitment to supporting nation-building efforts and its ability to provide high-performance steel solutions for complex engineering challenges.
Commenting on the successful completion of these iconic rail engineering projects, Ranjan Dhar, Director and Vice President, Sales & Marketing at AM/NS India, said: “Our contribution to the Chenab and Anji Khad bridges is a true reflection of the ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision. These bridges are not just engineering feats, but symbols of India’s growing industrial strength and self-reliance. Our role in these landmark projects aligns closely with the development goals laid out by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
He added, “Despite the logistical challenges posed by the remote, mountainous terrain of Jammu & Kashmir, we ensured smooth delivery and execution. Through collaboration with both public and private stakeholders, we are not just building infrastructure; we are helping create a more self-sufficient and prosperous India.”
