Modern driver assistance systems rely heavily on front cameras. Until now, independent workshops depended exclusively on original parts from vehicle manufacturers for repairs or replacements. ZF Aftermarket is changing this landscape by introducing the ZF Smart Camera—a state-of-the-art camera designed specifically for the independent aftermarket segment.

Since July 2024, the adoption of vehicles equipped with driver assistance systems has surged, driven by new European Union regulations mandating features such as Automatic Emergency Brake Assist, Intelligent Speed Assist, and Lane Departure Warning on all new cars. All these systems require data from a front-facing camera sensor to operate effectively.

As the world’s largest supplier of front cameras, ZF produces over ten million units annually for 14 automobile manufacturers. Over the next decade, nearly all vehicles in Europe will be equipped with these cameras, presenting substantial opportunities for independent workshops to gain expertise in handling these advanced systems.

Previously, after an accident or windshield damage, replacing the front camera posed challenges due to the lack of available spare parts in the open market. The introduction of the ZF Smart Camera addresses this gap by providing an integrated solution—combining ZF’s proprietary hardware and software—that meets original equipment manufacturer (OEM) standards, preserving the full functionality of driver assistance systems.

The ZF Smart Camera will be available in ten versions compatible with over 50 vehicle models, including popular brands under the Stellantis Group (Citroën, DS, Peugeot, Opel) and Nissan.

ZF Aftermarket’s offering extends beyond the camera itself, encompassing a full Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) support ecosystem. This includes workshop equipment for precise diagnostics and calibration of installed cameras. The company provides its proprietary diagnostic software, ZF MultiScan, and calibration tools such as ZF’s own calibration walls.

To ensure proper use of these tools, ZF Aftermarket offers dedicated training courses through its ZF [pro]Tech workshop program. These courses equip technicians with the skills necessary to become ADAS specialists.

Markus Wittig, Global Head of Business Line Passenger Car at ZF Aftermarket, stated, “Expanding our ADAS product range demonstrates our ongoing commitment to maximizing vehicle uptime and creating added value in partnership with our customers. By providing innovative products, intelligent tools, diagnostic solutions, and practical training, we empower mobility professionals to lead the transition. For us, uptime means not only more operational time for vehicles but also greater efficiency for our partners. Our objective is to deliver lasting support through a robust, integrated ecosystem.”
