On the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity, Vedanta Aluminium, India’s leading aluminium producer, has announced a comprehensive set of biodiversity-focused initiatives aimed at conserving wildlife and restoring natural ecosystems across its operational areas. These efforts include the rescue and safe release of over a thousand reptiles and small animals, afforestation drives, pond restoration, reintroduction of native plant species, and community education programs.
Aligned with the global theme “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development,” Vedanta Aluminium is reinforcing its long-term commitment to environmental stewardship. In collaboration with PwC India, the company is revising its Biodiversity Management Plans to align with its goal of achieving No Net Loss (NNL) of biodiversity.
At Jharsuguda, Odisha, Vedanta is advancing water conservation and ecological restoration across 30 villages through the revival of local ponds. These efforts aim to enhance aquatic biodiversity and provide improved access to clean water for surrounding communities. Additional environmental enrichment includes a 1.2-kilometer avenue plantation and the refurbishment of two community gardens, contributing to long-term ecological sustainability in the region.
In Jamkhani, Sundargarh District, Vedanta is implementing the Miyawaki afforestation technique to establish dense, native greenbelts around its coal operations. The initiative has resulted in the planting of over 365,000 saplings across 18 hectares, creating a fast-growing forest ecosystem. This approach not only strengthens local biodiversity but also acts as a natural buffer to mitigate environmental impact.
At BALCO in Korba, Chhattisgarh, wildlife protection and land reclamation efforts are being actively pursued. A trained Animal Rescue Team has successfully rescued and released more than a thousand reptiles and small animals over the past year. Simultaneously, over 60 hectares of inactive tailing dams have been rehabilitated through the plantation of native tree species, including Neem, Siras, Sheesam, Karanj, and Gulmohar, transforming the area into a thriving green landscape.
Vedanta Aluminium emphasizes the importance of community participation in conservation efforts. Educational outreach programs involving school students and employee families include plantation drives, nature walks, and awareness events like tree-hugging campaigns and human chains to instill environmental values from an early age.
These initiatives are part of Vedanta Aluminium’s broader strategy under its “Transforming for Good” framework, focused on restoring ecological balance and embedding sustainability into its core operations. The company’s approach underscores its view that industrial growth must progress hand in hand with environmental preservation.
A division of Vedanta Limited, Vedanta Aluminium is the country’s largest aluminium producer, accounting for 2.42 million tonnes of production in FY25—over half of India’s total output. Known for its high-quality, value-added aluminium products, the company plays a pivotal role in supporting sectors that rely on advanced material applications.
