A key meeting chaired by Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, HD Kumaraswamy, has confirmed the rollout of approximately 10,900 electric buses across major cities in four states under the Prime Minister’s E-Drive scheme. This initiative is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s plan to promote clean urban transport and enhance sustainability. The buses will be deployed across Telangana, Karnataka, Delhi, and Gujarat, contributing to the country’s urban mobility goals.

As part of the current phase, Bengaluru will receive around 4,500 buses, Hyderabad will get 2,000, Delhi will have 2,800, Ahmedabad will receive 1,000, and Surat will be allocated 600 electric buses. The overarching PM E-Drive program aims to deploy a total of 14,028 electric buses with an investment of ₹10,900 crore over a two-year period, from April 2024 to March 2026. This effort is among the largest nationwide initiatives aimed at electrifying public transport on a large scale.

Shri Kumaraswamy praised the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, emphasizing that cities across India are increasingly adopting electric buses to create cleaner, smarter, and more efficient public transport systems. He further stressed that this program is not just about deploying electric buses but about shaping the future of transportation with an emphasis on innovation and environmental sustainability.

Close collaboration between the Centre and states such as Telangana, Karnataka, Delhi, and Gujarat is key to realizing the full potential of the PM E-Drive scheme. The PM E-Drive scheme is a pioneering initiative aimed at transforming urban mobility in India through the widespread deployment of electric buses.

Launched as part of the government’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transport, the scheme targets the electrification of public transport across major cities. With an ambitious goal of introducing over 14,000 electric buses by 2026, the initiative is expected to significantly reduce air pollution, lower dependency on fossil fuels, and enhance the efficiency of public transportation systems.

The scheme is being implemented in phases, with the first phase focusing on cities in states like Telangana, Karnataka, Delhi, and Gujarat. By investing in clean energy solutions, the PM E-Drive scheme not only supports environmental goals but also helps in building a smarter, more eco-friendly urban transport infrastructure, contributing to India’s broader vision of a sustainable and green future.
