Humans, machines, and robots occupy modern production facilities. These must fulfill high-security needs. They must be secure for workers and must resist cyber-attacks.
Scientists of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA, and Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies, and Image Exploitation IOSB have collaborated on the Roboshield project, which comprises focusing on the safety of small and medium-sized industries in Baden-Wurttemberg. These scientists offer free advice to these companies.
“Due to the currently observed cyber-attacks against production facilities, this topic is more pressing than ever,” says Dr. Christian Haas of Fraunhofer IOSB.
Roboshield will cover all these aspects of safety and security and, hence, may become the company’s door opener to Industry 4.0

Nowadays, IT Security is rising insignificance. In view of the enhanced interconnections and sensor-equipped work environments, employees’ data must be protected. The scientists work on processes and tools to enable companies to convert their facilities securely, economically, and quickly. Additionally, a Consulting Center is planned. This Center will provide advice regarding the usage of a robot in the production facility, advantages of this usage, and pertinent regulations and provisions.
“Digitization and interconnection cause the requirements to be met by modern production facilities to increase constantly,” says Dr. Christoph Ledermann, KIT. “With Roboshield, we want to help small enterprises to switch to Industry 4.0. First of all, the focus will be on preventing the components of the facility, such as robots, from injuring people.”
The industries in Baden-Wurttemberg can leverage the ‘quick checks’ facility. Post-acceptance, these companies can inquire about the security of their production facilities. The Roboshield experts are scheduling training courses on various topics such as secure software development. Companies have the opportunity to talk directly to experts.
“Companies may ask for a risk assessment of a human-robot workplace or for advice as to how a robot can reliably identify humans working in its vicinity,” Ledermann says.
