The Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP), a renowned safety rating system for vehicles, has updated its FleetSafe guide, recommending that corporates and fleet owners prioritize safer vehicle selections by opting for vehicles with NCAP’s ‘five-star’ ratings and complying with UN safety standards for passenger cars.
David Ward, President Emeritus of GNCAP, highlighted the importance of improving road safety, noting that work-related crashes account for one-third of global road deaths, making driving one of the leading risks for employees. “By updating our FleetSafe guide, we aim to assist fleet managers in making more informed and safer vehicle purchasing decisions. Enhancing fleet selection and acquisition will ensure safer vehicles enter the fleet, ultimately protecting the health and well-being of employees and helping to save lives worldwide,” said Ward.
Ward further emphasized the significance of using GNCAP’s guidelines, explaining that a commitment to five-star rated vehicles is the best way for fleet managers to fulfill their duty of care towards employees. It also helps reduce the financial impact of road accidents and demonstrates a true commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility. “How vehicles are driven, maintained, and purchased plays a crucial role in improving road safety,” he added.
With over 1.1 billion two-wheelers sold globally, there is an increasing need to implement safety measures for these vehicles. Ward pointed out that two-wheelers account for 44% of road fatalities in India, making their safety a key priority. “Safety measures like anti-lock brakes (ABS), blind spot detection systems, and improved helmet standards are essential for enhancing two-wheeler safety,” he noted.
GNCAP also recommends that all two-wheelers capable of speeds above 50 km/h should be equipped with anti-lock braking systems (ABS) to improve rider safety. Ward praised India’s leadership in ABS standards, noting that while ABS is mandated for bikes above 125cc, it could be extended to all motorized two-wheelers above 50cc.
“ABS has proven to be an effective intervention to reduce road crash risks and fatalities involving two-wheelers,” said Ward. “This technology should be a standard feature in all motorized two-wheelers above 50cc.”
GNCAP’s recommendations underscore the critical role that vehicle safety standards play in preventing road accidents and saving lives. The organization’s updated FleetSafe guide provides fleet managers with the tools needed to make safer, more informed vehicle choices, thereby contributing to global efforts to improve road safety.
