The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract valued at approximately Rs 2,385 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement and installation of advanced electronic warfare (EW) systems and aircraft modification kits for Mi-17 V5 helicopters used by the Indian Air Force. These cutting-edge systems will significantly improve the operational survivability of the helicopters in hostile environments, according to the ministry’s statement.
The agreement, which falls under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured) category, was signed in New Delhi with Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in attendance. It covers the acquisition of EW suites, modification kits, and their installation in the Mi-17 V5 helicopters, along with associated equipment, at a total cost of Rs 2,385.36 crore.
Most of the sub-assemblies and components for the project will be sourced from domestic manufacturers, further supporting Indian electronics and related industries, including MSMEs. This initiative is a major step towards enhancing India’s indigenous electronic warfare capabilities, aligning with the Make-in-India initiative and reinforcing the country’s push towards self-reliance in defence technologies.
