Alstom, a global leader in sustainable mobility, is enhancing its Motala operations with a new specialized center focused on the maintenance of Traxx Universal locomotives. The center will consolidate all maintenance services for these locomotives, including routine servicing, repairs, wheelset and bogie maintenance, and signaling systems, under one roof.
Maria Signal Martebo, Managing Director of Alstom Sweden, explained, “This investment not only strengthens the local industry but also benefits the broader European railway sector. By centralizing our expertise in Traxx locomotive maintenance, we contribute to making rail transport and freight services more sustainable and competitive, aligning with our long-term strategic goals.” Per Stridsman, head of Traxx maintenance in Motala, added, “This development enhances our ability to provide comprehensive services for Traxx locomotives, both in the Nordics and across Europe.”
Alstom’s Traxx Universal locomotives are used for both freight and passenger services. They feature modular construction, high reliability, and energy efficiency, and are designed to significantly reduce CO2 emissions.
Mikael Granberg, Head of Rolling Stock Maintenance for the Nordics, noted, “There is a growing demand for Traxx locomotives and their maintenance services. By centralizing our expertise in Motala, we can offer more efficient and flexible solutions.”
Alstom has secured an eight-year full-service agreement with Alpha Trains, Europe’s leading locomotive and train leasing company, for ten Traxx Universal locomotives. This contract includes preventive and corrective maintenance at the Motala facility, along with mobile field repair teams and a technical assistance hotline for drivers. The deal represents Alstom’s first service contract in the locomotive segment in Sweden.
Vincent Pouyet, Managing Director of Locomotives at Alpha Trains, stated, “This collaboration ensures that our customers benefit from maximum reliability and reduced downtime. By partnering with Alstom, we reinforce our commitment to sustainable and efficient transport solutions across Europe.”
Alstom is making significant investments in the Motala site, adding advanced technologies such as a wheel press for changing locomotive wheelsets and upgrading the bogie line. The site will also maintain cutting-edge signaling systems as part of the service package. The Motala facility works closely with Alstom’s other locations across the Nordic region, Germany, and Europe.
“This investment strengthens both the local industry and the European railway sector,” added Maria Signal Martebo. “By consolidating our Traxx maintenance expertise, we are supporting sustainable and competitive rail travel and freight transport, which is a key component of our long-term strategy.”
Alstom is the largest supplier to the Swedish train market, with over a thousand trains delivered to Swedish railways, as well as major maintenance contracts. The company also leads the implementation of the ERTMS signaling system in Sweden, both onboard and along the tracks.
As a market leader in rail services, Alstom offers a comprehensive range of services, supporting customers throughout the entire asset lifecycle. Alstom maintains over 35,500 vehicles worldwide, including more than 2,450 locomotives, and is a trusted partner for servicing both Alstom and non-Alstom rail assets.
