STMicroelectronics, a global leader in semiconductors, has unveiled enhanced capabilities for its ST87M01 NB-IoT and geolocation module, which is now fully certified for connectivity with Deutsche Telekom (DT) networks. The ST87M01 module, certified for NB-IoT Release 15, integrates both connectivity and geolocation functions in a compact design.
It complies with 3GPP and regional standards, such as the EU Radio Equipment Directive (RED), and features an optional GSMA-compliant embedded SIM with a secure element and GNSS receiver. Recent updates have added Wi-Fi positioning, improving geolocation performance indoors and in urban environments where GNSS signals may be weak.
The ST87M01, when paired with ST’s ST4SIM-300 embedded SIM, also supports Remote SIM Provisioning in line with the GSMA SGP.32 standard. This functionality allows users to switch between mobile network operators without needing to physically change SIM cards. Completion of the Deutsche Telekom certification program is part of a series of successful tests with various mobile network operators, confirming that the ST87M01 meets the required performance and efficiency standards.
Domenico Arrigo, General Manager of ST’s Application Specific Product Division, commented, “Deutsche Telekom’s certification distinguishes our NB-IoT and geolocation module, opening doors for us with customers across Europe. This achievement highlights our module’s superior network performance and efficient connectivity use.”
Uday Patil, Head of IoT Devices & Services at Deutsche Telekom, added, “The ST87M01 module has undergone rigorous testing according to both proprietary and industry standards, ensuring it provides safe, reliable, and efficient connections. It’s now fully certified for large-scale IoT deployments on Deutsche Telekom networks.”
The module is also approved by the Global Certification Forum (GCF), ensuring interoperability with mobile and IoT products. STMicroelectronics will showcase the ST87M01 module and its new capabilities at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (Hall 7, A61) and the Embedded World event in Nuremberg (Hall 4A, 148) in March 2025.
The demonstrations will highlight key IoT use cases, such as Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP), which supports the mass deployment of IoT devices. This feature enables seamless, secure switching between mobile network operator profiles via an intuitive dashboard application, allowing IoT device owners to remotely change networks without swapping physical SIM cards.
Additionally, the latest Wi-Fi positioning functionality will demonstrate how the ST87M01 can accurately determine its location by detecting nearby Wi-Fi access points. This allows for precise geolocation in areas where GNSS signals may be unavailable, such as indoor environments, parking garages, or multi-story buildings. STMicroelectronics continues to lead in the semiconductor space, with a focus on sustainability, including achieving carbon neutrality in emissions and transitioning to 100% renewable electricity by 2027.
