Rolls-Royce Marine North America Inc. and Triveni Engineering and Industries Limited (NSE: TRIVENI) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore opportunities for collaborating on 4MW marine gas turbine generators (GTGs) for Indian customers. The agreement covers several areas, including design, development, manufacturing, and comprehensive sales and support services for these marine GTGs.

John Shade, EVP for U.S. Business Development and Future Programs at Rolls-Royce Defence, highlighted the company’s extensive experience in naval propulsion, citing its role in powering advanced platforms like the U.S. Navy’s DDG-51 destroyer. Emphasizing India’s strategic importance, he stated that Rolls-Royce’s industry-leading marine gas turbine generators are well-suited to power the future fleet of the Indian Navy.

Abhishek Singh, SVP of Business Development and Future Programs for India and Southeast Asia at Rolls-Royce, underscored the significance of the company’s MoU with Triveni. He noted that this collaboration aims to integrate Rolls-Royce’s naval marine products with India’s defense ecosystem, ensuring end-to-end support for marine gas turbine generators—from installation and testing to aftermarket services. Rolls-Royce has been a long-term partner of India’s defense forces and continues to invest in localization and production capabilities to strengthen its presence in the country.

Tarun Sawhney, Vice Chairman & Managing Director of Triveni Engineering & Industries Ltd., expressed enthusiasm about the technology collaboration with Rolls-Royce for the indigenous manufacturing of marine gas turbine generators in India. He emphasized that this partnership will enhance India’s naval defense capabilities while strengthening the country’s self-reliant defense ecosystem. Triveni, with over five decades of expertise in rotary engineering and engineered solutions, has positioned itself as a preferred supplier to the Indian Navy and Coast Guard. The company is also investing in a multi-modal defense facility with large-scale infrastructure for manufacturing, integration, and testing of naval marine equipment.

With over 80 years of experience in naval propulsion, Rolls-Royce has been a leading global provider of power and propulsion solutions. Since launching the Allison 501-K17 gas turbine in 1972, Rolls-Royce has dominated the marine gas turbine generator market, with more than 350 units in service across global navies, including the British Royal Navy, Republic of Korea Navy, Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force, and U.S. Navy. Notably, over 280 units are deployed with the U.S. Navy alone.

The U.S. Navy’s DDG-51-class destroyers, part of the longest-running surface warship production program, have integrated over 200 Rolls-Royce AG9140 generator sets, each delivering 3MW of power. As power demands evolved, Rolls-Royce developed the AG9160 generator set, offering a 33% power increase to 4MW at 4160V, 60Hz, alongside enhanced controls, reliability, and efficiency.

In India, Rolls-Royce has built a strong aerospace and defense ecosystem, with mtu engines powering several Indian Navy and Coast Guard vessels. This positions the company as a key player in India’s naval defense modernization efforts.

Meanwhile, Triveni has established itself as a leading manufacturer of high-speed gears, with expertise in producing energy-efficient, high-power solutions for defense. The company’s global footprint spans over 80 countries, with a strong emphasis on international expansion. By leveraging India’s industrial growth and indigenization push, Triveni is enhancing its R&D capabilities and investing in new technologies, reinforcing its role in India’s defense and global markets.

Rolls-Royce specializes in developing and delivering advanced power and propulsion solutions for critical applications in the air, at sea, and on land.
