Hitachi Energy is enhancing its transformer components factory in Piteå, Sweden, through significant investments in new machinery and a 50% increase in staffing. The initiative responds to rising global demand for power transmission equipment, spurred by the ongoing energy transition.
The Piteå facility specializes in producing composite insulators critical for transformers, circuit breakers, and power electronics—key components for transferring large energy volumes across countries and long distances. The expansion will streamline operations, improve production efficiency, and enhance material handling. The factory will house three dedicated production lines for small and large insulators and cylinders for tap changers.
This growth reflects Hitachi Energy’s broader expansion efforts across Sweden and Europe, driven by the rapid shift towards sustainable energy solutions. The Piteå project aligns with recent investments in Ludvika, Västerås, and Smedjebacken, where capacity and operations have also been significantly upgraded.
In December 2024, Hitachi Energy acquired the property housing the Piteå factory. The expanded facility is expected to be operational by fall 2026, with the workforce growing from the current 200 employees to approximately 300 by 2030.
Hitachi Energy employs around 7,000 people in Sweden, with major operations in Ludvika and Västerås. This local presence forms part of a global workforce of 45,000 across 60 countries, supporting the company’s mission to advance sustainable, flexible, and secure energy systems.
The company’s innovative technologies, including HVDC systems capable of integrating over 150 gigawatts into global power networks, aim to enhance energy accessibility and efficiency. Headquartered in Switzerland, Hitachi Energy is committed to enabling the digital transformation needed for a carbon-neutral future.
As part of Hitachi Ltd., the organization leverages its Lumada solutions and expertise in IT, OT, and advanced products to address challenges across digital systems, green energy, and connective industries.
