Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has introduced a pioneering operational dashboard at its Jamkhani Coal Mine in Odisha. This advanced digital platform integrates real-time data, optimizes performance, and automates key processes. Developed internally by a specialized team, the dashboard utilizes the First Principles approach to monitor mining operations at a granular level. It provides valuable insights aimed at achieving operational excellence, focusing on metrics like cut rates, coal exposure, machinery utilization, and stock quality analysis.
The Jamkhani coal mine, Vedanta’s first greenfield project and the first private greenfield coal mine in Odisha, plays a critical role in supplying coal to the company’s Jharsuguda plant, the world’s largest aluminium smelter.
Sunil Gupta, COO of Vedanta Aluminium, highlighted the importance of this new digital innovation, stating, “The launch of the operational dashboard marks a significant step in our journey towards digital transformation. It enables us to refine our processes, create a culture of continuous improvement, and enhance overall efficiency.”
David Stone, CEO of Vedanta’s Coal Mines division, added, “The dashboard was developed in-house to align with our broader goal of integrating digital tools across our operations. Future upgrades, including SAP integration and fleet management, will further improve operational accuracy and sustainability.”
Vedanta is advancing its digital-first strategy with the launch of several initiatives aimed at enhancing safety, optimizing operations, and driving innovation across its operations. One such initiative is the Drone-Based Blasting Zone Clearance, which ensures a higher level of safety by covering larger areas during blasting and eliminating blind spots. This technology allows for more efficient and secure mining practices, reducing the risk to personnel and equipment.
To further streamline processes, Vedanta has introduced the Glocab App, a GPS-enabled platform that facilitates vehicle booking and tracking, significantly improving operational efficiency. Additionally, the Collision Avoidance System enhances safety by alerting drivers to nearby vehicles, thus preventing potential accidents. Meanwhile, the Fleet Management System leverages GPS and geofencing technology to track coal fleet movements, ensuring accurate trip accounting and optimizing resource utilization.
In line with its commitment to digital transformation, Vedanta has also rolled out the Contract Manpower Management System (CMMS), which simplifies the onboarding and attendance tracking of contract workers using biometric systems. Moreover, the Kodingamali Mines Dashboard offers real-time production tracking, providing comprehensive insights into mining operations and helping managers make data-driven decisions to enhance productivity.
These initiatives collectively reinforce Vedanta’s focus on operational excellence and innovation through advanced digital solutions. These initiatives showcase Vedanta’s commitment to driving digital transformation and operational excellence across its mining operations.
