ABB has introduced Phase 2 of its NEMA Motors Energy Savings Calculator, incorporating new capabilities based on user feedback to improve its functionality and ease of use. This updated version adds several advanced features, enabling motor operators to better understand the energy, financial, and environmental benefits of upgrading existing motors to more energy-efficient models.

Phase 2 introduces several advanced features aimed at enhancing functionality and user experience. One key update is the inclusion of variable-speed calculations and visual graphs, enabling users to analyze performance across different operating conditions more effectively. The phase also supports calculations for multiple motors simultaneously, providing a comprehensive view of system performance, including torque percentage data under partial load conditions. Additionally, users benefit from product selection enforcement through table options, ensuring accurate and efficient decision-making.

Further refinements include financial insights, such as yearly operating cost estimates and return on investment (ROI) projections spanning 1 to 20 years. These features are complemented by bar graphs comparing performance metrics like constant load versus partial load, offering a visual understanding of energy efficiency and savings. An innovative option to address and rectify results with negative cost savings ensures data reliability and practical outcomes for users.

Usability enhancements in Phase 2 include a bi-directional search function allowing queries by nameplate or material numbers, streamlining the search process. Furthermore, the platform now supports multiple languages, including English, French, and Spanish, catering to a diverse, global user base. These updates collectively elevate the tool’s versatility, precision, and accessibility.

The Energy Savings Calculator is an online tool that allows users to compare the energy consumption, costs, and CO2 emissions of their current motors with those of a new, high-efficiency ABB motor. By entering motor parameters such as horsepower, efficiency class, and speed, users can evaluate potential energy savings in kilowatt-hours, cost reductions in U.S. dollars, and annual CO2 savings.

The tool also generates a digital report with data and visualizations for further analysis. Phase 3, expected in late 2025, will include a broader search for various motor configurations, additional input options, and highly customizable reporting features.

Ben Hinds, Vice President of Product Marketing and Management for ABB’s NEMA Motors Division, commented, “As a global leader in motors and drives, we focus on increasing productivity while reducing carbon impact. Tools like the Energy Savings Calculator play a key role in helping our customers improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and embrace circular solutions, all while driving a sustainable future.”
