Indian Railway Finance Corporation Ltd (IRFC) announced on January 2 that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Railway Energy Management Company Ltd (REMCL), a joint venture between the Ministry of Railways (MOR) and RITES. The agreement is aimed at financing renewable energy (RE) projects to supply power to Indian Railways. As part of the collaboration, IRFC will explore financing opportunities for thermal, nuclear, and renewable energy projects developed under a captive model through joint ventures with Indian Railways and other partners.
The MoU establishes a framework for IRFC and REMCL to work together towards Indian Railways’ goal of reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. The partnership is focused on leveraging renewable energy solutions within the railway sector. REMCL will contribute its expertise in sourcing affordable conventional and renewable power, as well as managing the bidding process for setting up renewable energy projects. Meanwhile, IRFC will provide financial support through project evaluation and fundraising efforts.
This collaboration marks a significant move for IRFC to broaden its business model while continuing to play a pivotal role in the development of Indian Railways. It also aligns with the Indian government’s broader objective of providing sustainable, efficient, and world-class transportation infrastructure for the nation.
