NHPC Ltd, India’s leading hydropower company, has unveiled plans to invest ₹5,500 crore in a 1,000 MW solar power project in Bihar. The announcement was made by Chairman and Managing Director Raj Kumar Chaudhary during the Bihar Business Connect 2024 investor summit, where the company signed an MoU with the state government for the initiative.
Chaudhary stated that the project could be completed within 1.5 to 2 years once the land is acquired. Emphasizing the importance of timely land allocation, he urged the state government to facilitate the process to meet project deadlines.
With nearly 7 GW of operational hydropower capacity and another 9.3 GW under construction, NHPC is now expanding into solar energy and green hydrogen production. The company plans to establish a smaller solar plant in Bihar to generate electricity for producing green hydrogen. This green hydrogen will fuel passenger buses, contributing to the promotion of clean energy in the state.
The green hydrogen-powered bus project will be financed by NHPC and handed over to the state government as part of its clean energy initiative. Initially, one bus will be operational, with the fleet expanding as solar energy production increases.
NHPC is pursuing similar renewable energy projects in Gujarat and other states, aligning with the government’s focus on promoting green hydrogen as a sustainable fuel source. NHPC Limited, a leading public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, is a premier organization in the field of hydropower development.
Established in 1975, NHPC is dedicated to harnessing renewable energy sources, with a strong focus on hydroelectric power generation. The company operates several large-scale hydropower projects across India, contributing significantly to the country’s energy needs and sustainability goals.
NHPC has also diversified into solar and wind energy, further reinforcing its commitment to clean and green energy solutions. With its expertise in planning, designing, and executing hydro projects, NHPC continues to play a vital role in India’s transition to renewable energy.
