Indian electronics company Micromax and Taiwan-based storage chip leader Phison have launched a joint venture, MiPhi, to design and manufacture advanced AI-enabled storage chip modules domestically. Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma announced that production has already commenced at their Noida facility.

Micromax holds a 55% stake in the venture, with Phison owning the remaining 45%. The partnership aims to develop storage chipsets for servers, a critical component for national security and strategic growth. “This venture is set to reduce GPU costs by up to 90%, positioning India as a disruptor in the AI domain,” Sharma said.

Trials with major Indian organizations are underway, with commercial production slated to begin in early 2025. The initiative is expected to lessen India’s reliance on imported technologies by establishing an indigenous design and manufacturing ecosystem for storage solutions.

Micromax plans to train and onboard fresh talent, with a target of building a 1,000-strong engineering team within three years. Phison will oversee the training process to ensure expertise in developing cutting-edge storage technologies.

The joint venture will also focus on embedded solutions across various sectors, including automotive, IoT, mobile devices, data centers, and consumer electronics. The company will source wafers from global suppliers and process them into storage modules locally.

Sharma emphasized that MiPhi is built with a “design-first-for-India” approach, aspiring to deliver its first fully developed product within two years. Local sales teams will be established nationwide to drive the adoption of MiPhi’s solutions in key industries.
