The TCI-IIMB Supply Chain Sustainability Lab at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) has become the first in India to earn ISO 14083 certification for its Transportation Emissions Measurement Tool (TEMT). This achievement underscores the tool’s capability to precisely measure and report greenhouse gas emissions from freight transportation, supporting organizations in aligning with global sustainability standards.
Freight transportation accounts for nearly 40% of the transportation sector’s contribution to India’s greenhouse gas emissions, which currently represent about 14% of the nation’s total emissions. Without intervention, these emissions could quadruple by 2050, reaching 1.17 billion tonnes of CO₂ and increasing the sector’s share to 19% of total emissions.
The TEMT plays a critical role in addressing this challenge by offering a certified and reliable way to measure emissions across multiple transportation modes. The tool uses standardized emissions factors to enable businesses to quantify their carbon footprint, paving the way for actionable reduction strategies.
The ISO 14083 standard sets a global framework for calculating emissions from transport operations, covering road, rail, air, maritime, and inland waterways. Certification of TEMT ensures its compliance with these international guidelines, providing Indian organizations with a trusted resource to meet sustainability objectives and regulatory requirements.
In collaboration with the Government of India’s Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP), TEMT’s emissions factors API has been integrated to simplify emissions calculation for logistics operators. This innovation encourages transparency in the logistics sector and supports the transition to greener transport solutions. ULIP’s managing body, NICDC Logistics Data Services Limited (NLDSL), highlights the tool’s value in helping companies measure their carbon footprint and adopt cleaner practices.
The tool’s India-specific emission factors, validated under ISO 14083, allow users to analyze emissions for past and planned shipments, compare transport modes, and customize logistics chains. Cloud-based storage enables secure tracking of emissions over time, while results are provided in accessible PDF and CSV formats for streamlined reporting.
Founded in partnership with Transport Corporation of India Ltd (TCI) in 2023, the TCI-IIMB Supply Chain Sustainability Lab specializes in sustainable supply chain management research and consulting.
