ABB has been awarded a contract by Çolakoğlu Metalurji A.Ş. to install its ArcSave® electromagnetic stirrer (EMS) on one of the world’s largest electric arc furnaces (EAF). The 370-tonne capacity furnace, the largest in Türkiye, will benefit from ABB’s advanced stirring technology, aimed at improving efficiency, sustainability, and safety in steel production.
The furnace, supplied by Primetals Technologies, is used to produce a variety of carbon steel products, including slabs, hot-rolled steel coils, billets, and reinforcing bars. With the integration of ArcSave EMS, the facility will undergo a significant upgrade, supporting Çolakoğlu Metalurji’s commitment to sustainable steelmaking.
Since its establishment in 1945, Çolakoğlu Metalurji has grown from a small-scale producer to one of Türkiye’s leading steel manufacturers. The company introduced its first rolling mill in 1969, a melt shop in 1985, and its first EAF in 2007, marking a shift towards eco-friendly production. Today, the company operates one of the most advanced steel plants in the country, combining innovation with a strong focus on sustainability.
The decision to invest in ABB’s ArcSave EMS highlights Çolakoğlu’s forward-thinking approach to achieving sustainability goals. The stirrer’s rapid chemical and thermal homogenization capabilities will contribute to more efficient energy use and reduced environmental impact.
“This project comes with unique technical challenges, and we are impressed by ABB’s expertise in integrating ArcSave into our operations,” said Özgür Özsoy, Plant Director at Çolakoğlu Metalurji. “This collaboration reinforces our commitment to adopting innovative solutions for a sustainable future.”
ABB’s Global Head of Sales for Metallurgy, Zaeim Mehraban, emphasized the significance of this partnership: “Integrating ArcSave into one of the world’s largest electric arc furnaces demonstrates ABB’s ability to deliver advanced solutions for large-scale steelmaking operations while promoting efficiency and sustainability.” The installation of ArcSave EMS at Çolakoğlu’s plant is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2025.
