The Material Handling division of Godrej & Boyce, part of Godrej Enterprises Group, is making significant advancements in workplace safety and operational effectiveness through homegrown innovations and thorough skill development programs.

With material handling representing two-thirds of the manufacturing process and unsafe practices contributing to 40% of workplace accidents—80% of which stem from human error—the company has rolled out several advanced safety features in its equipment.

These innovations include a Seat Belt Interlock System, pedestrian safety lights, and an Operator Presence Sensor (OPS), which, along with the Enhanced Safety System (ESS), disables various functions of the forklift if the operator is not seated properly and wearing a seatbelt.

Additionally, the introduction of Smart Curve Control Technology reduces speed by up to 30% during turns, while an Anti-Rollback System prevents rollaways on inclines. The division also launched ‘i Report,’ India’s first safety application specifically designed for material handling operations in FY23.

To further support these technological enhancements, Godrej & Boyce has initiated extensive training programs in partnership with NGOs and training institutes for forklift operators. Over 3,500 operators have received training, with plans to train an additional 300 by FY25.

The company’s commitment to skill development is exemplified by its Integrated Skill Enhancement Platform (ISEP), which offers sales, service, and technical training through a digital interface. Notably, the company has included female and transgender individuals in its forklift operator training programs, fostering diversity and inclusivity.

Anil Lingayat, Executive Vice President and Business Head of the Material Handling division at Godrej & Boyce, stated, “We are dedicated to enhancing warehouse safety and operational effectiveness. Our indigenous innovations and comprehensive training initiatives align with the ‘Make in India’ initiative and contribute to the country’s growth. By prioritizing sustainability and skill development, we aim to empower Indian businesses to create safer and more efficient workplaces. This effort goes beyond business goals; it is about cultivating a skilled workforce and promoting responsible growth in the intralogistics sector.”

According to a report presented at the LogiMAT India logistics fair, the Indian freight and logistics market is projected to grow at an annual rate of 8.8% to reach USD 484.43 billion by 2029. With a strong emphasis on safety, innovation, and skill development, Godrej & Boyce is well-positioned to play a vital role in transforming warehouse operations in India while supporting the growth of this market with a focus on safety and sustainability.
