The Renewable Energy India (REI) Expo 2024, held from October 3-5 in Greater Noida, has secured investment commitments amounting to ₹1,850 crore for the biogas sector, according to Gaurav Kedia, Chairman of the Indian Biogas Association (IBA).

Kedia stated, “The IBA has successfully garnered expected investment commitments totaling ₹1,850 crore through joint ventures (JVs), memorandums of understanding (MoUs), and letters of intent (LoIs) at the recent REI Expo.” The REI Expo featured 47 exhibitors from 10 countries involved in biogas production.

The investments, anticipated to be realized over the next 2-3 years, indicate a strong international interest, particularly from Germany, Sweden, and the UK. “We have signed MoUs worth over ₹900 crore for joint ventures and received nearly 50 LoIs for the establishment of compressed biogas plants in India,” Kedia added.

Established in 2011 and restructured in 2015, the IBA serves as a national platform for bioenergy stakeholders, collaborating with organizations such as the German Biogas Association to foster the growth of the biogas industry in India. The REI Expo, one of India’s largest renewable energy events, showcases bioenergy alongside solar, wind, electric vehicles, and energy efficiency technologies.

The Bio-Energy Pavilion 2024, supported by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and key industry players, aims to accelerate India’s journey toward achieving net-zero emissions. Dr. A R Shukla, President of IBA, noted the expo’s success, highlighting the MNRE’s active involvement at the Bio-Energy Pavilion, which included scientists from the Sardar Swaran Singh National Institute of Bio-Energy (SSS-NIBE) in Kapurthala, boosting confidence in the bioenergy sector.

Shukla further stressed the importance of promoting bioenergy for its comprehensive benefits and unlocking the potential for energy self-sufficiency, asserting that, with appropriate policy support, the bioenergy sector could completely replace fossil fuels.

The Indian Biogas Association (IBA) is the leading national organization dedicated to promoting the use of biogas in India. It serves as a platform for stakeholders involved in the biogas sector, including policymakers, technology providers, industry professionals, researchers, and farmers.

The IBA focuses on advocating for sustainable energy solutions, aiming to harness the potential of biogas as a clean and renewable source of energy. By promoting the use of organic waste to generate biogas, the association seeks to reduce the country’s reliance on fossil fuels, minimize waste, and contribute to a greener environment.

Additionally, the IBA plays a vital role in policy development, awareness campaigns, capacity-building programs, and fostering collaboration between industry players to advance biogas technology and its applications across sectors like agriculture, industry, and households.
