SSAB and Smith Stal Collaborate to Supply Fossil-Free Steel to Norwegian Market

SSAB and Norwegian steel distributor Smith Stal have signed a letter of intent to deliver fossil-free steel to customers in Norway. This partnership aims to create a sustainable supply chain to meet growing demand for eco-friendly steel solutions in various sectors, including industry, construction, and offshore.

Smith Stal, a major steel stockist and distributor in Norway, offers a wide range of steel products, including plates, beams, hollow sections, and bars. Eirik Berg, Director at Smith Stal, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, “We are proud to bring SSAB’s fossil-free steel to our customers and address the increasing demand in the Norwegian market.”

It’s initiative focuses on reducing global CO2 emissions through innovative steel production methods. The company has developed two groundbreaking products: SSAB Zero and SSAB Fossil-Free Steel. The former is made from recycled steel using fossil-free electricity and biogas and has been available for commercial use since 2023. SSAB Fossil-Free Steel, created using the HYBRIT technology in partnership with LKAB and Vattenfall, replaces coal with hydrogen, emitting only water instead of carbon dioxide.
