Reliance Power announced on Monday that it has won a contract for 500 MW of battery storage through an e-reverse auction (eRA) conducted by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The auction, held on September 11, 2024, is part of SECI’s push to boost the country’s energy storage capacity.

The contract involves the deployment of 1,000 MW of standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) units under a build-own-operate (BOO) model for “On Demand” usage, awarded through a tariff-based competitive bidding process.

Reliance Power secured half of the total capacity, with 500 MW, marking a major move into the renewable energy and storage market. A company spokesperson noted that this victory underscores Reliance Power’s commitment to expanding its renewable portfolio.

The company submitted a competitive tariff bid of Rs 3.81999 lakh per MW per month, setting a new benchmark for BESS tenders at the 400 kV level in India. The project’s delivery point is set for the 400 kV Fatehgarh (ATL) substation in Rajasthan, with a scheduled commissioning date 24 months from the execution of the Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA).

Several major players participated in the auction, but Reliance Power’s win reflects its strategic focus on renewable energy and storage solutions. This competitive tariff is expected to set a new standard and help advance India’s energy storage capabilities.

Reliance Power, a part of the Reliance Group, is one of India’s leading private sector companies in the energy sector. Established with a focus on developing and operating power projects, the company has a diverse portfolio that includes thermal, hydroelectric, and renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.

Over the years, Reliance Power has played a key role in contributing to India’s energy needs through its large-scale generation projects across multiple regions. With a commitment to sustainability, the company is increasingly shifting its focus towards cleaner and greener energy solutions.

Recent developments, such as securing significant contracts in battery storage, highlight its strategic push towards renewable energy and advanced energy storage technologies, positioning it as a forward-looking player in the evolving energy landscape.
