Tata Electronics has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Tokyo Electron (TEL) to acquire equipment and services for its semiconductor manufacturing units currently under construction in Gujarat and Assam.

As part of the agreement, Tata Electronics and TEL will collaborate on workforce training for operating TEL equipment, and they will also work together on research, development, and continuous improvements. The partnership aims to support the setup of India’s first semiconductor fabrication plant (Fab) in Dholera, Gujarat, and an assembly and testing facility in Jagiroad, Assam.

According to Tata Electronics, the semiconductor Fab in Gujarat is being developed with an investment of ₹91,000 crore, while the assembly and testing unit in Assam involves an investment of ₹27,000 crore. These facilities will produce semiconductor chips for a range of industries, including automotive, mobile devices, artificial intelligence, and other critical sectors, catering to both domestic and global markets.

Tata Electronics Managing Director and CEO, Randhir Thakur, emphasized the importance of TEL’s expertise in the semiconductor equipment industry, stating that it will help create a robust ecosystem to support the timely construction of the Fab and advanced packaging plants.

In addition to providing equipment, TEL plans to explore opportunities to utilize India’s engineering talent to support its global product development initiatives. TEL President and CEO, Toshiki Kawai, underscored the strategic nature of the partnership, which covers both front-end fabrication and back-end packaging technologies, and expressed confidence in driving innovation across various technology nodes.
