RRP Electronics, a prominent player in the semiconductor industry, has been granted ‘mega project’ status for its ambitious semiconductor initiative in Maharashtra, involving an investment of ₹24,000 crore. This landmark project, approved by the state cabinet, will be executed in two phases, marking the first of its kind in the state.

In the initial phase, RRP Electronics will establish an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Testing (OSAT) facility within a 40,000 sq. ft. area at its modern Mahape site by September. The subsequent phase will see the expansion of production lines at a new plant in MIDC, Taloja, expected to be operational within two years.

The company has partnered with the renowned design firm HMT Zurich, which will support the semiconductor production at the Mahape facility. The OSAT unit will source wafers from various manufacturers to produce semiconductor chips, catering to industries such as automotive, power, and electronics.

RRP Electronics’ initiative is set to create 4,000 jobs in Maharashtra, contributing significantly to the state’s economic development and technological advancement. Chairman Rajendra Chodankar highlighted that the project’s mega project status acknowledges its potential to reduce India’s dependence on imported semiconductor chips from Taiwan and South Korea by at least 25%.

While India already has semiconductor production facilities in Chennai and Gujarat using the OSAT system, this project marks a pioneering effort for Maharashtra. RRP Electronics plans to initially supply chips to its partner, HMT Zurich, and is in discussions with other major industry players to secure additional orders.
