State-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) announced on Monday that it has secured a significant contract to develop a 1,600 MW thermal power project for Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC). The coal-based power unit will be established in Jharkhand’s Koderma district, utilizing an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model.

The project, known as the 2×800 MW Koderma Supercritical Thermal Power Project (STPP), was awarded to BHEL through International Competitive Bidding (ICB). This marks DVC’s first 800 MW unit, which will be constructed adjacent to two existing 500 MW units, also installed by BHEL under an EPC contract.

BHEL has a long-standing partnership with DVC, having installed over 80% of the coal-based power stations operated by the utility in Jharkhand and West Bengal. For this new project, BHEL’s responsibilities will include the supply, erection, and commissioning of the plant, as well as civil works.

The key equipment will be manufactured at BHEL facilities located in Haridwar, Trichy, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Bhopal, and Ranipet, with the company’s Power Sector – Eastern Region overseeing on-site execution. The project will also feature advanced emission control technology.

As India’s leading power equipment manufacturer, BHEL has a substantial installed base of over 168,000 MW of thermal power plants nationwide. The company continues to play a pivotal role in enhancing the country’s energy security and supporting the vision of self-reliance in the power sector, positioning itself to meet India’s growing demand for power equipment.
