Vedanta Nico Partners with Aesir Tech for Nickel-Zinc Batteries for EVs

Vedanta Nico, has signed an important agreement with Aesir Technologies, a US company known for advanced battery technologies. This partnership aims to develop and market new nickel-zinc (NiZn) batteries for electric vehicle (EV) chargers, essential infrastructure, and 5G telecom.

Vedanta Nico will supply nickel to Aesir Technologies for their next-generation batteries. These NiZn batteries offer better energy density, power, cost efficiency, and faster charging compared to current batteries. Nickel is vital for EV batteries as it improves energy density, power, and battery life.

Nickel-zinc batteries can charge quickly, reduce the need for cobalt, and enhance the overall value of EVs. The global demand for nickel in batteries is expected to rise from 150,000 tonnes in 2020 to 500,000 tonnes by 2025 due to the growing EV market.

The International Energy Agency predicts that the number of electric cars will increase from over 10 million in 2020 to 145 million by 2030, thanks to larger battery capacities, faster charging, and less cobalt use. Hindustan Zinc, the world’s second-largest zinc producer, has also signed an agreement with Aesir Technologies to supply zinc for these new NiZn batteries.

Prashuk Jain, COO of Vedanta Nico, said, “We are excited to work with Aesir Technologies to create a revolutionary battery solution for critical infrastructure, 5G telecom, and the EV market. Our nickel production expertise and Aesir’s innovative zinc battery technology make us well-positioned to meet industry needs.”

Randy Moore, CEO of Aesir Technologies, added, “Nickel-zinc batteries are a low-cost, sustainable, and safe alternative to lead-acid and lithium batteries. Our collaboration with Vedanta Nico ensures we have the necessary raw materials for these next-gen batteries, supporting our commitment to sustainability.”

Vedanta Nico, a major player in India’s nickel production industry, is expanding its focus on innovative battery technologies. The company is actively involved in the development of advanced nickel-zinc batteries, which are set to revolutionize energy storage and electric vehicle (EV) technologies. By partnering with AEsir Technologies, Vedanta Nico aims to leverage its expertise in nickel to support the creation of high-performance batteries.

These batteries promise better energy density, faster charging, and improved cost-efficiency, addressing key needs in the rapidly growing EV and renewable energy markets. This move underscores Vedanta Nico’s commitment to driving technological advancements and sustainability in the energy sector.
