Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) have signed an agreement to set up a small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant near the Hatta gas field in Madhya Pradesh.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on June 17, according to an ONGC statement. The gas discovered in the Vindhyan basin will be converted into LNG and transported by trucks to consumers.

The Hatta LNG plant will elevate the Vindhyan Basin from a Category II to a Category I Basin, signifying its increased importance and potential. India’s sedimentary basins are divided into three categories: Category-I (producing hydrocarbon reserves), Category-II (contingent resources pending commercial production), and Category-III (prospective resources awaiting discovery).

The plant will use advanced technology to produce LNG, which is cleaner than traditional fossil fuels, helping reduce carbon emissions and support India’s climate goals. The discovery at Hatta is the result of five decades of exploration efforts.

ONGC has submitted a field development plan to the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons to monetize its assets in the Hatta area. The MoU for the Hatta LNG plant is a step towards a sustainable future. As India moves towards energy self-sufficiency, the Hatta LNG plant symbolizes innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to a greener future.
