Sembcorp Green Hydrogen Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary of Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries, has entered into a partnership with Japanese companies Sojitz Corp. and Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. for the offtake of green ammonia from India. This agreement, announced on Thursday, follows a preliminary deal signed last December to explore the supply of green ammonia to Japan.

The partnership was unveiled at the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) Clean Economy Investor Forum, attended by Ken Saito, Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry; Tan See Leng, Singapore’s Second Minister for Trade and Industry; and Sunil Barthwal, India’s Commerce Secretary. This collaboration unites three IPEF member countries—Japan, Singapore, and India—in a cross-border effort to develop a low-carbon supply chain and promote the transition to a clean economy.

Sembcorp has secured land in India for the development of the necessary facilities, following the completion of feasibility and preliminary design studies. The consortium is now working towards securing a front-end engineering design award for the project.

As the project’s lead developer and operator, Sembcorp will utilize renewable energy to produce an initial 200,000 metric tonnes of green ammonia annually in India. Sembcorp Industries boasts a gross renewable portfolio of 4.7 gigawatts (GW) in India and an overall energy portfolio of 21.2 GW, including 14.4 GW of renewable energy capacity across 10 countries.

This strategic initiative highlights Sembcorp’s commitment to driving energy transition and fostering international cooperation in the development of sustainable energy solutions.
