Frankfurt Airport, one of the busiest international hubs in Europe, is testing the world’s first walk-through security scanner for passengers in collaboration with Rohde & Schwarz, a leading technology company. The innovative R&S QPS Walk2000 scanner is designed to streamline the security check process by allowing passengers to walk through without stopping, revolutionizing the airport security experience.
This groundbreaking 360° walk-through scanner employs millimeter-wave technology, capable of swiftly and contactlessly detecting a wide range of items. Unlike traditional security checks, passengers do not need to halt or remove jackets and coats, enhancing both comfort and personal privacy. The system’s AI-based detection software automatically identifies metallic and non-metallic objects, displaying any anomalies on a unisex avatar in real time, reducing the need for follow-up checks. This cutting-edge technology promises to make airport security more efficient and passenger-friendly.
The initial testing phase at Frankfurt Airport’s Terminal 1, Concourse A, will span up to six months. It marks a significant collaboration between Fraport and Rohde & Schwarz, aiming to optimize the system for enhanced security and passenger experience. While Fraport acquired and implemented the R&S QPS Walk2000, the German Federal Police, in partnership with Fraport, will conduct security-related tests and grant final approval for daily operational use.
The goal is to maintain the high standard of security while making security checks faster and more convenient for passengers. Frankfurt Airport’s Terminal 1, Concourse A, was chosen for the trial due to its high daily foot traffic of around 15,000 passengers. The test phase will directly compare the new R&S QPS Walk2000 scanner with the existing R&S QPS201 scanners to identify any immediate differences and ensure passenger security remains paramount.
The introduction of this pioneering technology demonstrates the commitment of Fraport and Rohde & Schwarz to enhancing airport security and passenger experience. With the successful implementation of the R&S QPS Walk2000, Frankfurt Airport aims to set new standards for airport security checks, emphasizing both safety and convenience.
As the world’s aviation industry continues to evolve, innovations like the R&S QPS Walk2000 are essential in maintaining the efficiency and effectiveness of airport security processes while adapting to the changing needs of passengers and airlines.
