Primetals Technologies has secured a contract from Shougang Jingtang United Iron & Steel to revamp its No. 5 continuous slab caster. The project will upgrade the caster’s operating capabilities and enable the production of a wider range of steel grades, including ultra-thick slabs for demanding applications. The upgraded caster is scheduled to start operations in September 2027.

The contract follows an earlier order placed by Shougang Jingtang in November 2025 for the revamp of the same caster. The latest project will introduce a series of process-control and equipment upgrades aimed at improving casting performance, product quality and operational flexibility.

The two-strand caster has a machine radius of 9.5 metres and a current metallurgical length of 39.5 metres, which can be extended to 44.26 metres in the future. It is designed to produce slabs with thicknesses of 250 mm and widths ranging from 1,100 mm to 2,150 mm. The machine will operate at casting speeds of up to 1.7 metres per minute.

The revamp includes Primetals Technologies’ DynaGap Soft Reduction technology, which controls the reduction of slab thickness during solidification to help improve internal quality. The LevCon system will provide automatic mould-level control, while a new strand guide and EcoStar Spiral rolls will form part of the mechanical equipment upgrades.

The project will also incorporate DynaPhase, Dynacs 3D and DynaGap 3D technologies. These systems will support process modelling, cooling control and dynamic adjustment of the casting gap. Their integration is intended to help operators manage solidification conditions and maintain consistent product quality across different steel grades.

Following the upgrade, Shougang Jingtang will be able to cast steel grades ranging from ultra-low-carbon to ultra-high-carbon steel. The expanded production range will support the company’s requirements for different downstream steel applications. The project forms part of Shougang Jingtang’s efforts to improve its steelmaking operations through equipment modernisation and process optimisation. The upgraded caster is expected to provide greater flexibility in production while meeting requirements for high-quality slabs with increased thickness.

Primetals Technologies supplies engineering, plant construction and lifecycle services for the metals industry. Its portfolio includes technologies and equipment for ironmaking, steelmaking, casting, rolling and processing, along with automation and digital solutions for steel producers.
