BL Agro Group has announced plans to invest ₹7,000 crore in Tanzania over the next 10 years, marking its entry into international markets. The proposed investment will cover edible oils, dairy, animal husbandry, agriculture, research and manufacturing, with projects to be developed in phases.
Headquartered in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, BL Agro aims to build an integrated business ecosystem in Tanzania by combining the country’s agricultural resources with Indian technology and food-processing expertise. The company expects the proposed projects to generate around one lakh local employment opportunities and support trade and investment ties between India and Tanzania.
Edible oil production will be a key focus of the expansion. Tanzania is a major sunflower producer and has potential to increase oilseed processing and local value addition. BL Agro plans to establish production and processing facilities to serve domestic demand and develop local manufacturing capabilities.
The investment plans follow a visit to Tanzania by a five-member delegation from BL Agro. The delegation met government representatives and other stakeholders to discuss potential projects and an implementation roadmap. The announcement also coincides with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s visit to India, during which both countries discussed opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
Ashish Khandelwal, Managing Director of BL Agro, said Tanzania offered opportunities across agriculture, food processing, dairy and related industries. He said the company planned to bring Indian technology and industry experience to the country while developing long-term partnerships with local communities and stakeholders.
The company is also exploring investment in modern dairy infrastructure and animal husbandry to support Tanzania’s livestock sector. Proposed initiatives include collaboration with local farmers through contract farming and agricultural supply-chain development. These efforts could strengthen connections between farm production, processing facilities and markets.
BL Agro is also evaluating opportunities aligned with Tanzania’s Building a Better Tomorrow (BBT) programme. The proposed projects will focus on technology transfer, employment, agricultural development, local value addition and supply-chain development.
Anisa K Mbega, High Commissioner of the United Republic of Tanzania to India, welcomed the proposed investment, saying it could bring technology, create jobs, develop skills and support farmers through local processing and sustainable growth. The international expansion forms part of BL Agro’s ambition to become a ₹30,000 crore group by 2030. The company expects Tanzania to provide a base for exploring opportunities across East Africa.
