Siemens is collaborating with Portugal-based energy company Galp Energia to digitalise GalpH2Park, a renewable hydrogen project in Sines that is expected to become one of Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen plants when it begins operations at the end of 2026. For the first phase of the project, which will have a capacity of 100 MW, Siemens is deploying its digital software portfolio to improve plant operations, support production planning and optimise energy use. The collaboration is intended to help Galp operate renewable hydrogen production at an industrial scale with greater efficiency and control.

A central component of the deployment is Siemens’ Hydrogen Performance Suite (HPS), a digital platform designed to monitor and improve the performance of renewable hydrogen facilities. The system uses a predictive Digital Process Twin, based on physics-based modelling, to provide operational insights and support real-time optimisation.

Siemens is also deploying software for process modelling, data analytics and real-time visualisation. The integrated system will convert plant data into information that operators can use to make faster, data-based decisions. By connecting the digital twin with live plant data and external information from grid operators and energy markets, the Hydrogen Performance Suite is designed to give Galp’s operators a comprehensive view of plant performance. This is expected to support production scheduling and energy procurement. Siemens estimates that the system could deliver energy savings of up to 15%, helping reduce operating costs and improve the plant’s sustainability.

“GalpH2Park is a lighthouse for Europe’s energy transition,” said Axel Lorenz, Executive Vice President, Automation Process Industries at Siemens. “We are convinced that digital innovation is the key to making renewable hydrogen economically viable and accelerating the decarbonization of industry. Siemens is turning this ambition into industrial reality – at scale.”

The GalpH2Park facility is expected to use renewable electricity sourced through long-term supply agreements and Galp’s own renewable generation capacity. Once operational, the plant is planned to produce up to 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually.

The project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 110,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year under Scope 1 emissions. The reduction would contribute to Portugal’s and Europe’s efforts to cut industrial emissions and advance decarbonisation.

Siemens provides digital and automation technologies for hydrogen production, including monitoring and control systems, industrial automation, digital twins, power protection and distribution, and drives. Its solutions combine electrification, instrumentation and digital services to support the development and operation of hydrogen facilities. The collaboration with Galp brings these capabilities to a large-scale renewable hydrogen project, with digital optimisation intended to improve operating efficiency and strengthen the commercial viability of renewable hydrogen production.
