The International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT Hyderabad) and Hexagon R&D India have joined hands to establish the Hexagon Digital Twin Centre of Excellence (CoE) at IIIT Hyderabad. The centre will focus on research, education and industry collaboration in computer vision, spatial computing and digital twins, with the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

As part of the collaboration, students, faculty members and researchers at IIIT Hyderabad will get access to Hexagon’s precision imaging laser scanner, Leica BLK360 G2, along with the related software. The technology enables the capture of detailed spatial data for creating high-quality digital twins of physical environments.

The Centre of Excellence will provide a platform for research projects, prototypes and proof-of-concept development. It will also support work on industry challenges and create opportunities for students and researchers to use industry-grade equipment and datasets.

The partnership will encourage research in areas where computer vision and spatial computing can be applied to real-world problems. Students and researchers will be able to explore applications of digital twin technology across different sectors while gaining experience with tools used in industry.

The initiative builds on Hexagon’s academic partnerships in deep technology and foundational sciences across the world. For IIIT Hyderabad, the centre will further strengthen its work in AI, computer vision and related areas while connecting academic research with industry requirements.

Prof Sandeep K. Shukla, Director, IIIT Hyderabad, said, “This collaboration with Hexagon will give our researchers and students access to advanced technologies and real-world spatial data, creating opportunities to take research from the lab to practical applications. We look forward to building a strong research and innovation ecosystem through this Centre of Excellence.”

Navaneet Mishra, Senior Vice President and Head of Hexagon’s R&D India, said, “The ability to capture, understand and digitally represent the physical world is opening up new possibilities across industries. Through this Lab, students and researchers will have access to Hexagon’s technologies and real-world challenges. It is a proud moment for us to collaborate with India’s leading Computer Science and AI Research institute, IIIT Hyderabad.”

Nora Hollenstein, VP, AI Hub at Hexagon AB, said, “Hexagon has research collaborations across the globe, and I am excited to bring it to India now. We aim to create an environment where ideas can be tested, and further deep research can help with creating real-world solutions.”

The Hexagon Digital Twin Centre of Excellence is expected to provide a platform for students, researchers and industry teams to work together on new applications involving digital twins, spatial computing, computer vision and AI. The International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT-H) is an autonomous research university established in 1998. The institute focuses on Information Technology, including Computer Science, Electronics and Communications, and their applications through interdisciplinary research.

Its research areas include Visual Information Technologies, Human Language Technologies, Data Engineering, VLSI and Embedded Systems, Computer Architecture, Wireless Communications, Algorithms and Information Security, Robotics, Building Science, Earthquake Engineering, Computational Natural Sciences, Bioinformatics, Education Technologies, Power Systems, IT in Agriculture and e-Governance.
