TotalEnergies and Eni have taken the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the development of the Cronos gas field in offshore Block 6, Cyprus. TotalEnergies and Eni each hold a 50% interest in the project, with Eni serving as operator. The Cronos field was discovered in 2022 and successfully appraised in 2024. Located in deep waters approximately 185 kilometres southwest of Cyprus, the development will comprise four subsea wells connected to existing infrastructure in Egypt.
Gas produced from Cronos will be transported through a subsea pipeline from Cypriot waters to Egypt. It will then be processed and liquefied at the Damietta LNG terminal before being exported to European markets. Production is expected to begin in 2028, with output planned to reach approximately 500 million cubic feet per day. This is equivalent to around 2.8 million tonnes of LNG per year, with TotalEnergies expected to market half of the production.
The project is designed to make extensive use of existing infrastructure in Egypt, including offshore facilities associated with the Zohr field and the Damietta LNG terminal. The approach is expected to support a faster development schedule while reducing the carbon intensity associated with production.
The development follows the signing of a Host Government Agreement by TotalEnergies and Eni with Cyprus and Egypt in February 2025. Key commercial and contractual arrangements required for the project have also been completed. These agreements cover the use of offshore infrastructure, gas transit through Egypt, liquefaction at Damietta and the sale of the resulting LNG.
The Cronos development could also create an opportunity to bring additional gas resources from Block 6 into production in the future. Further resources are expected to be evaluated through upcoming appraisal campaigns.
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies, said the project represents an important step for Cyprus and the wider Eastern Mediterranean region. He highlighted the use of existing Egyptian infrastructure and said the development could contribute to a new regional gas hub while providing additional LNG supply options for Europe.
Cronos is also expected to strengthen TotalEnergies’ LNG portfolio. The company reported a global LNG portfolio of 44 million tonnes in 2025 and has interests across liquefaction, transportation, regasification, trading and LNG bunkering. The project reflects the partners’ strategy of developing gas resources through existing infrastructure while improving project economics and limiting emissions. It also strengthens cooperation between Cyprus, Egypt and international energy companies in developing Eastern Mediterranean gas resources.
