Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) has completed a government-led Critical Design Review for the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye Block II upgrade, clearing the programme to move into integration and testing of the most significant modernization effort in the platform’s history. Following completion of the review, Northrop Grumman will begin integrating and testing the Block II upgrade, with upgraded aircraft scheduled for delivery by the end of the decade. The programme is designed to enhance the E-2D’s situational awareness, improve crew efficiency and provide greater flexibility to incorporate future technologies.

The Block II modernization represents a major evolution of the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye since the platform’s original development. The upgrade includes comprehensive changes to mission-system hardware and software intended to strengthen the aircraft’s ability to support airborne early warning and battle management missions in an increasingly complex threat environment.

A modular open systems approach forms a central element of the Block II architecture. The use of open standards and commercial off-the-shelf technologies is intended to simplify future upgrades, support long-term fleet sustainment and help control modernization costs.

Northrop Grumman plans to incorporate the Block II configuration into the E-2D’s active production line for new aircraft while also supporting retrofit activities for aircraft already in service. Integrating the modernization effort across production and retrofit activities is expected to expand the capacity to upgrade the fleet.

Janice Zilch, vice president and program manager for the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye at Northrop Grumman, said completion of the Critical Design Review demonstrates the expertise of the programme’s workforce and industry partners. She noted that the upgrade is intended to improve situational awareness, reduce crew workload and create a foundation for future technology insertion.

The E-2D Advanced Hawkeye is an airborne early warning and command-and-control platform developed for missions involving airborne surveillance, battle management and coordination. Continuous modernization is intended to ensure the aircraft remains relevant as operational requirements and threats evolve.

The E-2D programme also contributes to the US defense industrial base, supporting more than 4,000 jobs across 411 companies in 40 U.S. states. The programme therefore extends beyond platform development, contributing to manufacturing and technology capabilities throughout the U.S. supply chain. With the Block II upgrade moving into integration and testing, Northrop Grumman is positioned to continue the modernization of the E-2D fleet while supporting the US Navy and international customers.
