ABB has introduced a significant upgrade to its ProcessMaster FER620 electromagnetic flowmeter range, delivering improved measurement accuracy, reliability and operational efficiency for water infrastructure applications operating under challenging conditions. The enhanced flowmeter has been engineered to address the growing demand for dependable flow measurement in water treatment, distribution networks, pumping stations, irrigation systems and water abstraction facilities.
At the heart of the upgraded solution is a fully welded, hermetically sealed sensor designed to provide long-term performance in harsh operating environments. The rugged construction protects the device against moisture ingress and environmental exposure, ensuring stable operation even in demanding field conditions.
One of the key advantages of the ProcessMaster FER620 is its ability to be installed directly underground without requiring a dedicated chamber. The sensor carries an IP68 protection rating, enabling continuous submersion in water while maintaining measurement integrity and reliability. This capability reduces installation complexity and can help lower infrastructure costs for utilities and operators.
The upgraded design also incorporates a reduced bore configuration that significantly enhances low-flow measurement performance. The flowmeter can accurately measure flow velocities ranging from very low rates through to 10 metres per second, offering a wide turndown range. This makes it particularly effective for monitoring low-consumption periods, including night-time flow conditions, where accurate measurement is critical for leak detection, network optimisation and resource management.
Designed for installation flexibility, the ProcessMaster FER620 features a 0xD/0xD configuration that eliminates the need for straight pipe runs upstream or downstream of the meter. This allows deployment in confined spaces where conventional flowmeters may face installation challenges.
“Water utilities and infrastructure operators are increasingly looking for solutions that combine accuracy, durability and adaptability,” said Krishna Prashanth, Global Product Line Manager for Electromagnetic Flowmeters at ABB Measurement & Analytics. “The enhanced ProcessMaster FER620 delivers dependable performance in demanding environments while maintaining accuracy even where installation constraints limit available pipe runs.”
The flowmeter is part of ABB’s modular ProcessMaster platform, developed to support long-term sustainability and lifecycle efficiency. Its modular architecture allows upgrades and adaptations to changing operational requirements without requiring complete system replacement, helping customers extend asset life while reducing maintenance costs and material waste.
Digital connectivity remains a core feature across the ProcessMaster portfolio. Integrated IoT capabilities enable users to access high-speed communication options for both plant-based and remote installations. These capabilities provide enhanced visibility into field assets, support advanced data analytics and enable more effective process control and performance monitoring.
With the latest enhancements to the ProcessMaster FER620, ABB continues to strengthen its portfolio of intelligent measurement solutions designed to help utilities and industrial operators improve efficiency, reliability and resource management across critical infrastructure networks.
