Marking World Environment Day 2026, Mitsubishi Electric India reinforced its commitment to environmental sustainability by advancing its community-focused conservation programme at Pulicat Lake and surrounding coastal villages in partnership with Earthwatch Institute India. Launched a year ago, the initiative has now entered a new phase with expanded activities aimed at protecting water resources, restoring ecosystems and improving climate resilience among local communities. The programme focuses on the ecologically significant Pulicat region, where environmental stewardship is closely linked to the livelihoods of fishing communities and coastal residents.
As part of the World Environment Day observance, Mitsubishi Electric India organised a volunteer engagement programme involving employees, local conservation groups, women’s Self-Help Groups, Mangrove Club members and fisherfolk representatives. Participants took part in mangrove plantation activities, visited restoration nurseries and observed environmental monitoring systems deployed under the project.
The conservation effort recognises the vital role of mangroves in protecting shorelines, supporting biodiversity and reducing the impact of erosion and extreme weather events. Alongside ecological restoration, the initiative has empowered local women to serve as lake stewards and climate ambassadors within their communities. These groups have been actively leading awareness campaigns, conducting clean-up drives and promoting responsible waste management practices around the lake and coastal areas.
The programme also works closely with fishing communities to encourage sustainable environmental practices. Training sessions have highlighted the importance of recovering abandoned fishing nets, preventing waste disposal into water bodies and safely releasing Olive Ridley turtles that may become accidentally trapped in fishing gear.
A strong educational component has been incorporated into the initiative through easy-to-understand learning materials explaining the impact of climate change on local ecosystems. Topics include rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, salinity intrusion and increasing vulnerability to extreme weather conditions.
Technology has emerged as a key pillar of the programme. Digital biodiversity tools, environmental monitoring systems, air-quality sensors and weather stations have been introduced to help communities better understand ecological changes and support informed conservation decisions. These resources are helping local climate stewards track environmental conditions and strengthen adaptation measures. The initiative supports national priorities related to water conservation, sanitation and climate action while contributing to global sustainability objectives, including clean water management, sustainable communities and climate resilience.
