Dr Reddy’s Laboratories has announced the launch of its generic Semaglutide Injection in Canada, marking a significant milestone in the company’s global GLP-1 portfolio expansion strategy. The launch follows the Notice of Compliance granted by Health Canada on April 28, 2026, making Dr. Reddy’s among the first companies to introduce a generic version of Semaglutide Injection in the Canadian market.
Canada has become the first G7 nation to authorize a generic Semaglutide Injection, reinforcing the country’s role in enabling broader patient access to advanced diabetes therapies. Dr. Reddy’s stated that the rapid commercial rollout shortly after regulatory approval demonstrates the company’s preparedness and commitment to improving treatment accessibility for patients living with type 2 diabetes.
The product is indicated for once-weekly treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycemic control in combination with diet and exercise. Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Semaglutide Injection is supplied as a sterile solution for subcutaneous administration through a pre-filled pen format designed for convenient patient use. The injectable therapy is available in 2 mg/pen and 4 mg/pen strengths, each delivering Semaglutide at a concentration of 1.34 mg/ml. The 2 mg pen is designed for 0.25 mg and 0.5 mg dosage delivery, while the 4 mg pen supports 1 mg dosing.
Semaglutide belongs to the GLP-1 receptor agonist class of medicines that are widely used in the management of type 2 diabetes. The therapy is prescribed alongside diet and exercise programmes and may be used in combination with other antidiabetic treatments including metformin, sulfonylureas, SGLT2 inhibitors, and basal insulin under appropriate clinical guidance.
Erez Israeli, Chief Executive Officer of Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, said the Canadian launch highlights the company’s strong capabilities in complex drug development and peptide-based therapies. He noted that Dr Reddy’s Laboratories established market presence and commercial infrastructure in Canada position the company well to support patient access to advanced and affordable GLP-1 therapies.
Mr Israeli added that the Canadian launch builds upon the momentum created by the company’s recent Semaglutide launch in India under the Obeda brand. He emphasized that GLP-1 therapies remain a major strategic focus area for Dr Reddy’s Laboratories as the company continues expanding access across multiple international markets.
The company stated that its investment in peptide technologies, complex generics, and specialty pharmaceutical development has strengthened its ability to address growing global demand for advanced diabetes therapies. Demand for GLP-1 treatments has risen sharply worldwide due to increasing prevalence of diabetes and growing adoption of next-generation metabolic therapies.
Dr Reddy’s Laboratories also highlighted that Semaglutide Injection is not intended as a substitute for insulin and should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus or diabetic ketoacidosis. The company noted that the therapy has not been studied in combination with short-acting prandial insulin.
